Znojmo welcomes visitors with a serene atmosphere, charming narrow streets, and breathtaking views. Upon your arrival, be sure to visit půlnapůl, a discreet café that clinched the title in its category at the 2022 Gourmet Jižní Morava competition.
Take a stroll along the historic Znojmo city walls, allowing the stunning panorama of the meandering Dyje River and the grandeur of St. Nicholas Church to enchant you. Savour a glass of wine on the terrace adjacent to the Romanesque St. Catherine's Rotunda.
The best way to start your day in Znojmo? Definitely with a hearty breakfast at Balance coffee & wine! Whether you choose to relax in the cozy interior, on the hidden garden terrace, or simply watch the hustle and bustle on the street leading to the city center, you're in for a treat. Once you're refreshed, set out to explore the first local gem that combines modern architecture and wine. Enotéka znojemských vín (Znojmo's Enoteca of wines) is right in the heart of it all. Perched on a rocky outcrop on the outskirts of the historic center, right next to the St. Catherine's Rotunda and Znojmo castle.
The distinctive design is the creation of the renowned architectural studio Chybík a Krištof. You'll be amazed by the expansive views through its large windows and the creatively arranged seating on multiple levels. However, what truly draws customers to Enotéka is the opportunity for wine tasting, and that will be a breeze here. With a self-service "by the glass" system, you can savour the wines of the Znojmo wine subregion in small tasting portions according to your preferences and capacity.
This tip is particularly enjoyable during hot summer days. Within Znojemské podzemí (Znojmo's underground), you can find a delightful escape from the heat while discovering fascinating insights into the city's history. If you have an adventurous spirit, select one of the adrenaline-filled routes to challenge and assess your agility and flexibility.
After a hearty lunch (we recommend the Slepičák restaurant, for example), plan a leisurely activity. Hop on board of Znojmáček and let it show you the historic center from a different perspective. This experiential electric bus will take you on an entertaining and slightly educational journey. It can drop you off near the Municipal Waterworks, where hiking trails begin, leading you into the lush green jungles of the Podyjí National Park. Here, you'll also find the Educational Trail With The Salamander Hugo in the Gránické údolí (Gránický Valley), which will entertain and engage particularly children. Along the way, in addition to informative signs about the local nature, you'll encounter wooden depictions of the regional fauna. With a bit of luck, you might even spot some rare animals!
Znojmo is beautiful, but its surroundings are equally enchanting. In the afternoon, take a short drive a few kilometres outside of town Havraníky. On the outskirts of the village, you can't miss the new realm of Thaya Winery. The name refers to the German name of Dyje River, while the undulating roof of the production hall reflects the surrounding Moravian landscape. The heart of this establishment is a former granary, with an open rooftop terrace. You can stay in classic hotel rooms or in apartments with private gardens that instantly evoke images of Hobbiton for fans of Tolkien's saga. The confident architectural design of this estate was crafted by the Jakub Cígler Architects studio. At the APRI restaurant, savour outstanding wines and superb cuisine made from local ingredients. At the end of the day, all that's left is to let your fatigue melt away in the bubbles of the hot tub.
After breakfast, take a short drive (or walk – it's not far) to Hnanice. Soak in the atmosphere of the wine alley and then continue along the green hiking trail to the Devět mlýnů viewpoint. From there, you'll have a commanding view of the Dyje River and the oldest Šobes vineyard. You can also get up close to the vineyard, first following the yellow trail and then the red trail across the romantic Šobeská footbridge. Vineyards all around, and as you ascend the hill, a delightful surprise awaits in the form of a wine stand. That's a win!
Enjoy your lunch at the restaurant in the Vinice Hnanice Hotel or at the Happy Star Hotel. Feeling re-energized? Excellent. On the other side of Znojmo, you'll find another winery that definitely deserves the attention of design and modern architecture enthusiasts. The unique design of the Lahofer Winery is the work of none other than the renowned Chybík+Krištof studio. The award-winning 2020 Building of the Year seamlessly blends into the surrounding landscape. It reflects the undulating terrain, and the colonnade with vaulted ribs follows the rhythm of the adjacent rows of vines. During the summer, the amphitheatre hosts open-air concerts, which you can enjoy from the steps and walkable roof. Inside the LAHOtéka, indulge in wines that have matured in the nearby vineyards.
Are you up for one more winery? You shouldn't miss out on this one. The Piálek & Jäger Winery in Nový Šaldorf will win you over, not just with its wines but also with the genuine hospitality of the owners. Inside, you'll notice the prevalent motif of circles, drawing inspiration from the wine grape. The glass circles in the floor offer a unique view from the bar down to the cellar and back, ensuring that everyone remains connected, even in separate spaces. It's the perfect way to wrap up your excursion.
