You can get to the perfect ruins of the Cornštejn Castle either from a parking lot which is half a kilometre away or from the bus stop called Bítov, Cornštejn. It is hard to say if there is a more romantic place in South Moravia than this large castle. Even though it is ruins, there are guided tours in season and it is worth listening to what the guide says!
Depending on the current program, the guided tours are combined with performances by swordsmen. The castle was abandoned in the 16th century, but it is still very lively here on holidays. Jugglers, medieval music, performances by self-confident swordsmen… maybe a bit of kitsch but all of this looks excellent against the backdrop of wild nature in the Podyjí National Park.
From Cornštejn, follow the green tourist marker to the centre of Bítov. Here you’ll find the famous U Tesařů restaurant. Its owners have opened their own brewery next to the restaurant. The brewery has been recognized in the prestigious Gourmet South Moravia show and gourmands come from far and wide to try its beer specials. Try beer cracklings, non-alcoholic beer lemonade or beer jelly made from wort.
After you have replenished your energy levels, set out along the red tourist trail and take a beautiful walk along the meandering Dyje River to the Bítov Castle, one of the oldest castles in the Czech Republic. Because this is supposed to be a tip for a trip with everything a proper trip should include, we recommend that you get some refreshments at one of the beaches (grass or sandy) before you start climbing up towards the castle. Of course, you can go on a guided tour of Bítov, but it is nice enough just to walk around the castle area.
The closest bus stop with buses departing to Znojmo, Moravské Budějovice and Jihlava can be found on the journey from the castle in the centre of Bítov, opposite the municipal office. You will get there after two kilometres of walking along a forest path or along the road.
