Znojmo is a beautiful royal town founded by King Ottokar I of the Přemyslid dynasty. To this day history still emanates literally from every alley (at least in the centre). You have probably seen the beautiful Gothic Town Hall Tower and Vlk Tower at least in a photo. The most romantic views can be enjoyed from atop them: the historical part of the town and the greenery of the Podyjí National Park with Gránice Valley (Gránické Údolí), where you should definitely go to experience peace and harmony after you finish sightseeing.

Masaryk Square with well-preserved Renaissance burgher houses is situated between the two towers. There are also tiles with the year 1437 at the place where Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund, nicknamed the Ginger Fox, allegedly fell from his horse and suffered a heart attack.

Just a few hundred metres from these memorable places, visit the Romanesque Rotunda of St. Catherine with artistically and historically priceless frescoes from the Přemyslid era. Surprisingly, the rotunda is situated on the premises of a brewery. In addition to beer, you can enjoy a splendid view of the Dyje River Valley from the walls or the best wines in the Enotéka wine shop. Znojmo Castle has also been standing here for hundreds of years.

As Znojmo is the sunniest place in the Czech Republic, you will definitely like to cool down in the ancient Znojmo Underground in the hot summer! Dating back to the 14th century, it is one of the most extensive underground labyrinths in Central Europe. The complex network of underground corridors is 27 km long and has four floors. Note that besides the classic tour (even this one is not boring at all) they have three adrenaline tours for those who fancy something special.

This royal town is also home to remarkable churches: Over 800 years old, the majestic St. Nicholas’ Church (where else would you find a globe-shaped pulpit?), the two-storey St. Wenceslas’ Chapel right next to it, or the Church of St. John the Baptist for instance.

A tourist train, popular with both tourists and locals, cruises through the town. It also goes along the oldest alleys and the stops are always linked with attractive points. It will take you as far as the Louka Monastery, where you can taste wines from Znovín winery in addition to tasting some history.

Znojmo is a cultural Mecca with many events – the Znojemská Beseda website will provide you with current information.
